On a race against time

In January 2007 I decided that no matter what we were going to make a feature film in 2007. I had a personal line of credit and I assured myself that I had to write something to fit that budget.  From January to March with many fits and starts Duane Murray and I got a feature script together. We budgeted it with Jordan O’Connor and it came in at 3 times the max I had. It was gutting. We thought, well, this most likely won’t happen this year. Alone and desperate I just couldn’t give up, I had to do this, I had to make a feature this year, I just had to. I sat down on March 15th and by March 30th as atrophy set into my limbs I had completed what is now Tkaronto. From March 30th to May 30th we got all the casting and pre-production done along with script re-writes and refinement. By June 7th we began shooting and by June 30th we had the first edit together. By July 9th the picture edit was locked and the other fine post-production details had begun (sound, score and colour correction). Then on August 7th we found out that we not only made it into the 2007 ImagineNATIVE Film Festival, but we were chosen for the Closing Night film. On the 8th of August I took my very first deep exhale in about eight months. Now I can more fully enjoy and be present for the last six weeks of my wife’s pregnancy. Whew.
